The UVWRT began as a Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth (f.k.a. Dartmouth Medical School) student community outreach program in 1995. After nearly 25 years, Dartmouth ended the relationship with UVWRT and, on November 14, 2019, The Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, Inc. was formed as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation under Chapter 292 of the New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated.
The Corporation was formed for the specific purpose of providing law enforcement in New Hampshire and Vermont, having jurisdiction for missing or injured persons, a source of volunteer trained emergency manpower, which is prepared for search and rescue operations and to provide the community with a source of education and outreach for information and instruction in areas related to search and rescue, and the support of related activities consistent with the goals of the Corporation.
The UVWRT is a member of the New Hampshire White Mountains Search and Rescue Working Group and the Vermont Search and Rescue Association and works closely with New England K-9 Search and Rescue responding to callouts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in New Hampshire and Vermont as well as requests from NH Fish and Game and Vermont State Police and other jurisdictional agencies.
The UVWRT currently has approximately 30 active volunteer members who are trained in SAR operations and are prepared to be self-sufficient in a wilderness environment for 24 hours without re-supply. Many members are active EMS personnel, and all are well-versed in outdoor skills. Training sessions are geared towards all members attaining and exceeding the standards of the NASAR SAR Technician II and III level.
